Members of the genus Arcella construct a proteinaceous test (shell) with numerous tiny alveoli reinforcing the test.

The image shows a test from dorsal and ventral. On the ventral side, the aperture, two contractile vacuoles and two vesicular nuclei with centric nucleolus each are visible.
