In 2016, I found a monothalamid organism in my tropical freshwater aquarium and handed it over to Ferry Siemensma, who, along with other researchers, identified it using molecular biology techniques as Edaphoallogromia australica Meisterfeld, Holzmann & Pawlowski, 2001(https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ejop.2020.125744).

However, in addition to the habitat difference (freshwater vs. tropical soil), there were also morphological differences, leading Ferry Siemensma and Maria Holzmann in 2026 to consider it justified to describe the freshwater-dwelling monothalamid as a separate species (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ejop.2026.126192).
