Three images.
First: | Vegetation cone of the red alga Leptosiphonia fibrillosa with epibionts (Cothurnia spec., a peritrich ciliate, and Licmophora juergensii, an araphid diatom). The filamentous hairs (trichoblasts) only occur near the vegetative pole and are therefore short-lived. |
Second: | A more mature branch of Leptosiphonia fibrillosa with growth organisms (Licmophora juergensii , an araphid diatom and some filamentous colonies of cyanobacteria). |
Third: | Zoom on the cell surface. The red tiles are the chloroplasts. The green of chlorophyll is masked by the accessory pigment phycoerythrin. |
