Cyphoderia ampulla (Ehrenberg, 1840) Leidy, 1879

Most likely ID: Ichthyosquama loricaria Soler-Zamora et al., 2023 (*)

Synonyms for Ichtyosquama: n.a.

Remark: In the paper mentioned below, Soler-Zamora et al. used molecular biology to investigate the problem of ‘shadow species’ in the collective species Cyphoderia ampulla sensu lato and established the new genus Ichthyosquama. The specimen shown here under the name Cyphoderia ampulla (still common in 2024) is most likely a member of the genus Ichthyosquama: I. loricaria.

First:Synoptic representation of the test (shell).
Second and third:Optical cross-section through the ampulla. The specimen has produced numerous silicious scales for the next generation.
