Coscinodiscus wailesii Gran & Angst 1931
Most likely ID: n.a.
Basionym: n.a.
Add’l Synonyms: n.a.
Sampling date 04/2025. Scale bars indicate 100 µm (1), 50 µm (2), 25 µm (3, 4).
Sampling and preparation for the light microscope by Hermann Hochmeier, Wilhelmsburg (Austria).
Four images.
| First: | Synoptic representation of the upper valve. |
| Second: | Synoptic representation of a girdleband part. |
| Third and fourth: | Close-up showing the delicate sieve plates (cribra) on the outside. In image 4, the focus was placed on the coarser, inner perforated plate at the upper right of the girdle edge. The SEM images in the block below are from Coscinodiscus concinnus, which has a similar shell structure, and show the frustule structure in detail. |

Detail of Coscinodiscus concinnus
Sampling date 04/2025. Scale bars indicate 5 µm (1), 1 µm (2).
Sampling and preparation for the light microscope by Hermann Hochmeier, Wilhelmsburg (Austria).
Two images.
A high-magnification view of the inner girdleband surface reveals its double-layered structure. The delicate sieve areas (cribra) on the outer surface are visible through the larger openings of the inner perforated plate.
