Most likely ID: n.a.
Basionym: n.a.
Add’l Synonyms: n.a.
Remark:
The shell structure and feeding behavior are very similar to Pseudonebela africana. Since the feeding behavior, in particular, does not fit the genus Difflugia at all, it is very likely that it is also a member of the genus Pseudonebela. For details, see https://arcella.nl/pseudonebela-rubescens/.
Molecular biological studies in this regard would be desirable!
Sampling date 06/2007. Scale bars indicate 25 µm.
Four images, three of them in a slide changer.
| First: | Optical cross-section showing cytoplasma. |
| Second and third: | Synoptic representation of the test (shell). |
| Fourth: | Difflugia rubescens has a very special way of feeding: These amoebae are capable of piercing the cellulose walls of desmids and ingesting their cell contents. Their aperture is serrated; for details, see the description of https://arcella.nl/pseudonebela-rubescens/. The side-view images of the test above provide a glimpse of these teeth (arrows in the inset in the upper left corner). |
